The mortality due to acute myocardial infarction is higher in men than in women. From the 1980s to the present date there has been a slow and gradual decline in mortality from this pathology, in both sexes. Moreover the difference between North and Centre-South, which was apparent in the 1908s, has become smaller especially as regards men.
The graphs (men, women) and tables (men, women) below illustrate the trend of the mortality rate due to acute myocardial infarction from 1980 to 2002 in the various geographical areas of the country: North-East (Trentino Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Emilia Romagna), North-West (Valle d'Aosta, Piemonte, Liguria, Lombardia), Centre (Toscana, Umbria, Marche, Lazio), South and Islands (Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicilia, Sardegna). Mortality rates for persons aged 35-74 years were calculated and standardized using the direct method and the standard European population to allow for a comparison between the different geographical areas and genders. The original data come from the database on mortality in Italy of the Statistical Department of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità . In the graphs, mortality rates are presented using a scale from 0 to 200 per 100,000 for men and a scale from 0 to 50 per 100,000 for women.
