In Italy, diseases of the circulatory system ranks first among all diseases in mortality, accounting for 42% of all deaths. In the adult population (aged 35-74), they account for 28% of all deaths; in particular, 12% are due to ischaemic heart disease and 6% to cerebrovascular disease (2002 data).
The database on mortality in Italy of the Statistical Department of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità processed ISTAT mortality data for all ages due to ischaemic heart disease and cerebrovascular events in the Italian regions from 1980 to 2002.
