Mortality due to cerebrovascular disease, by geographical area

Mortality due to cerebrovascular events is higher among men than among women. From the 1980s to the present, there has been a slow and gradual decline in mortality from these pathologies in both sexes. Among women, cerebrovascular events are more frequent in Southern Italy than in all other geographical areas. Among men, this difference is less apparent. Moreover, differences in rates between the several geographical areas have not significantly changed over time. This is not the case for mortality from ischemic heart diseases.

 .

The graphs (men, women) and tables (men, women) below illustrate the trend of mortality rate due to cerebrovascular disease from 1980 to 2002 in the different geographical areas of the country: North-East (Trentino Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Emilia Romagna), North-West (Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy), Centre (Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Latium), South and Islands (Abruzzi, Molise, Campania, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily, Sardinia). Mortality rates for persons aged 35-74 years were calculated and standardized using the direct method and the standard European population as reference to allow for a comparison between the different geographical areas and genders. The original data come from the database on mortality in Italy of the Statistical Department of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. In the graphs, mortality rates are presented using a scale from 0 to 140 per 100,000 for men and a scale from 0 to 100 per 100,000 for women.
