Biomarkers are considered potentially useful tools to improve cardiovascular risk assessment. However, the role of biomarkers in providing more reliable and precise risk assessment than using risk scores based on classic and well-established risk factors (e.g. the risk chart and the individual risk score of the Progetto CUORE), remains uncertain; as well as their impact between the various geographical areas and therefore their role towards an improvement of personalized medicine.

The population cohorts of the Progetto CUORE, thanks to the availability of biological samples stored at very low temperatures in the population biobank of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, offer the opportunity to investigate the predictive role of some biomarkers for the estimation of coronary and cerebrovascular risk.
