The PHIRI (Population Health
Information Research Infrastructure) project, launched by the
European Commission and lasting 36 months (November 2020-November
2023), involved 41 partners from 30 countries, including Italy with
the participation of the National Health Institute (Istituto Superiore di Sanità - ISS).
The project is composed of nine work packages (WP) which
correspond to the main lines of research, dissemination and
management of the project:
- WP1 (Coordination and Management): focuses on the coordination
and management of the scientific, administrative and financial
aspects of the project (leader: Research Institute and National
Institute of Public Health “Sciensano”, Belgium)
- WP2 (Communication and Portal Development): focuses on the
development and implementation of effective communication channels
inside and outside PHIRI (leader: Research Institute and National
Institute of Public Health “Sciensano”, Belgium)
- WP3 (Outreach, Engagement and Sustainability): is responsible
for the involvement of key stakeholders at national and
international level (leader: Research Institute and National
Institute of Public Health “Sciensano”, Belgium; co-leader: National
Institute of Public Health, Austria)
- WP4 (Health Information Portal for COVID-19): aims to build the
Health Information Portal to facilitate access to health and
healthcare data related to COVID-19 among EU countries (leader:
National Institute for health and well-being, Finland; co-leader:
National Institute of Public Health, Slovenia)
- WP5 (Research Methodologies to Assess the Impact of COVID-19):
focuses on supporting European countries to understand the impact of
COVID-19 on population well-being and on health, morbidity and
mortality, using a multidisciplinary approach (leader: Faculty of
Medicine of the University of Lisbon, Portugal; co-leader: Instituto
de Salud Carlos III, Spain)
- WP6 (Research Use Cases Measuring the Impact of COVID-19 on
Population Health): aims to conduct research through use cases of
immediate relevance for public health policies and the management of
the COVID-19 pandemic and facilitate further research by making
scalable and reproducible methods available within PHIRI (leader:
Robert Koch Institute, Germany; co-leader: National Institute of
Public Health, Romania)
- WP7 (Building a Federated Research Infrastructure for a Rapid
Policy Response): aims to create a federated research infrastructure
that overcomes obstacles related to data reuse and sharing for a
rapid response to policy-relevant research as the pandemic (leader:
Instituto Aragonés de Ciencias de la Salud, Spain; co-leader:
University of Wales, United Kingdom)
- WP8 (Rapid Exchange Forum): aims to establish a sustainable
infrastructure to facilitate the rapid exchange of information and
expertise between public health authorities and researchers in the
joint effort to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic (National Institute of
Public Health, Austria; co-leader: Ministry of Health, Malta)
- WP9 (Foresight: Modeling and Scenarios): aims to obtain
information on the possible future impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic
on population health, developing scenarios specific to the national
context of each Member State and associated countries (leader:
National Institute for public health and environment, Netherlands;
NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal).
