Incidence

It is estimated that in 2000, in Italy, 51,874 new major coronary events occurred in men aged 25-84 years and 26,934 in women of the same age range. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) was 227.3 events per 100 thousand men and 97.9 events per 100 thousand women.


These incidence rates derive from the incidence and survival data collected in the MONICA Register-Friuli Area, and processed using the MIAMOD model together with ISTAT demographic and mortality data.

Differences can be found in the various areas of the country:

  • North: it is estimated that in 2000, 23,802 major coronary events occurred in men and 12,415 in women. The ASIR was 221.5 per 100 thousand men and 93 per 100 thousand women
  • CCentre: it is estimated that in 2000, 10,951 major coronary events occurred in men and 5,819 in women. The ASIR was 228 per 100 thousand men and 100.2 per 100 thousand women
  • South: it is estimated that in 2000, 17,367 major coronary events occurred in men and 8,722 women. The ASIR was 238.9 per 100 thousand men and 104.2 per 100 thousand women.
