Evidence based prevention and health policies must be supported by information on: population health, high risk conditions, diseases and sanitary interventions. Indeed, the mortality Register, disease population-based Registers, and longitudinal studies provide information on the onset of diseases, in particular for coronary and cerebrovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In the frame of the Progetto Cuore, the National Institute of Health (ISS) coordinates studies that contribute to the surveillance of coronary and cerebrovascular diseases in the Italian adult population:

• Population registers
